Student Niner Media inspires local high school poetry club to launch magazine

Through their high school outreach program, Student Niner Media Advising and Support has inspired a local high school's Poetry Club to launch their own literary arts magazine. Corvian Community High School recently published its first edition of “Wing Writers.”

The publication, both online and in print, features works from students, faculty and staff. The inaugural edition includes poetry, short stories, prose and flash fiction. Students can also submit visual art including digital art, paintings and photography.

This new endeavor is led by the faculty advisor, Rachel Harr, who brought her students on a field trip to visit Student Niner Media in January. After learning the ins-and-outs of "Nova" operations, Ms. Harr got to work on helping her students to create their own publication. ("Nova" is Student Niner Media's award-winning literary arts publication and has been a staple across campus since 1970, when it was titled “Sanskrit.”)

Wing Writers also has an online presence that is maintained by their students.

Student Niner Media started the high school outreach program only a couple of years ago and welcomes area high schools to take tours and hear directly from students involved in media at the collegiate level. Recent visits have been from Rocky River High School and Corvian Community High School's newspaper club, “The Cardinal Times.” “The Cardinal Times” also started printing this year, after a visit last spring to Student Niner Media.

"In offering these tours, I learned that many high school students did not know that they could continue to hone their skills in media through student organizations in college. We expanded this program — offering not only tours, but also bringing our students to present to high school journalism classes," Kelly Mergeš, director of Student Niner Media Advising and Support, said "We've already had a local high school student express her genuine interest in both Student Niner Media and UNC Charlotte. This shows that this community outreach is extremely valuable for both our students and the high school students in our area."
