From Classroom to Center Court: Alum Elevates Charlotte’s Dance Scene
By Micah Jordan, Student Communications Assistant for Student Affairs
From NBA arenas to Halton Arena, Dedrick’s Dance District is committed to producing dance’s next generation of top-tier talent with swagger and professionalism, stemming from his time at UNC Charlotte.
Dedrick Perkins-Barrier ‘15, who earned his bachelor’s in dance from the College of Art + Architecture, is celebrating the 10th anniversary of his company Dedrick’s Dance District, more commonly known as D3.
D3’s newest team, D3 Dance Entertainment, took the floor at Charlotte men’s basketball’s game against Livingstone College on Dec. 4, a moment that brought Perkins-Barrier back to where it all began.
“I feel like I'm grateful that I'm prepared now to enjoy these moments,” he said. “It all feels full circle … I love that [dance] brings families together.”
Charlotte to Company: Building D3
Beginning his journey at 21 while still a Charlotte student, Perkins-Barrier started to lay the foundation for his company through teaching at local dance studios, leading workshops and choreographing for various teams. These experiences shaped his vision for D3: a space where young dancers could develop their skills, confidence and professionalism in a supportive and dynamic environment.
“I wanted to create something that not only cultivated talent, but also prepared dancers for the realities of the professional world,” Perkins-Barrier said. “D3 is more than dance competitions; I want to provide real opportunities and real experiences.”
Over the past decade, Perkins-Barrier has expanded D3’s reach and reputation, offering dancers opportunities to perform at high-profile events, including NBA games, Walt Disney World at Orlando and dance competitions across the east coast. But none of that would be possible without the start he was able to have at the University.
“My education from UNC Charlotte prepared me to lay the foundation for my business and dance studio which is still running 11 years later,” he said. “My experiences performing and hosting shows at Charlotte with my program has not only allowed me to elevate my program, but also provide the youth the opportunity to have these experiences, which may shape them into future performers, dance studio owners and even possible future 49ers.”
D3 Dance Entertainment: Taking the Court
Perkins-Barrier’s connection to the basketball court is personal and profound. He has spent five seasons as a dancer for the

Charlotte Hornets’ Hive Hip Hop Crew, serving as captain for the past two. He has captivated audiences with his energy and precision, and now he’s passing the torch to his own team.
Recently, D3 Dance Entertainment had the opportunity to perform in the Spectrum Center during an Ally Tipoff game on Nov. 10. His dancers took center court in the same arena Perkins-Barrier does weekly, an achievement that underscores his dedication to providing dancers with unforgettable experiences.
“Performing on the court is a unique experience,” Perkins-Barrier said. “It’s high-energy, high-stakes, and there’s nothing quite like it. I’m happy to give my dancers the chance to shine in that arena … and many more to come.”
As Perkins-Barrier looks to the future, his vision for D3 remains ambitious. He plans to break away from the traditional competition circuit, focusing instead on providing his dancers with professional opportunities that prepare them for careers in entertainment.
“I want D3 to be a launching pad for young dancers,” Perkins-Barrier said. “Whether they’re 8 or 18, I want them to leave D3 feeling confident and ready to take on the world.”
