Juan Pizarro

University Commendations for Leadership and Service Recipient

Juan Pizarro earned his Master's of Social Work degree this Spring with a 4.0 GPA. As a First-Generation student with over a decade of military service, Juan brought a unique perspective to UNC Charlotte. In his personal statement, Juan wrote, “leadership is more than just taking charge; it’s about showing up for people, creating opportunities, and making sure no one feels like they’re facing challenges alone.” He lived that philosophy by serving as the Vice President of both the Student Veterans of America and Advocates for Change student organizations. Juan championed mental health awareness through his work developing the Green Zone for Students course as an intern for the Military and Veterans Services Office, presenting in the Graduate and Professional Student Government 3-minute thesis competition on post-traumatic growth and resilience, and participating in the Run the Ball Challenge with East Carolina University.
