New Programming Initiative Engages First-Year Students

Article Date

Year One Launch, a new programming series featuring more than 90 virtual events between Aug. 3 and Sept. 3, will connect incoming students to the University prior to their first day of class. By intentionally focusing on three key areas — success, belonging and financial wellness — Year One Launch will help students transition into the 49er community.

The idea for Year One Launch began when members of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs identified an opportunity for new students to begin their college experience prior the Sept. 7 semester start.  The Year One Launch implementation team leveraged existing campus interest in offering programs over the summer to create an expansive experience for new students eager to start their first year at UNC Charlotte.

“Keeping our newly admitted students engaged between SOAR (Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration) and the first day of class is more important than ever right now," said Emily Wheeler, director of New Student & Family Services. "Our goal with Year One Launch is to sustain that connection throughout summer while equipping our new Niners with skills to successfully navigate their college career."

The full schedule of events is available through the Niner DestiNation mobile app by downloading the “Year One Launch and Gold Rush” guide. Students will find a variety of virtual programming opportunities such as:

  • Ways to meet other new Niners through staff-facilitated getting-to-know-you activities held small groups to foster peer connections
  • Tips to excel academically, establish strong study habits and adapt to new learning formats
  • Q&A with current students to gain insight into life at Niner Nation
  • Interactive workshops with the University Career Center
  • Short videos focused on financial literacy and money management.

Additionally, the guide includes more than 30 Gold Rush events. Gold Rush kicks off each semester with welcome activities for new and returning students. Events start Sept. 4 and are hosted by campus departments and student organizations to instill a sense of Niner Pride, teach campus traditions, expose students to campus resources and opportunities for involvement. Gold Rush’s signature event, New Student Convocation, takes place Sept. 6.

Year One Launch builds on existing efforts to support first-year students. The Year One website not only provides information on the Year One Launch initiative but also connects incoming students to ongoing University resources such as freshmen and transfer learning opportunities, honors and peer mentoring programs, and financial aid education.
