Effectively immediately, Dr. Casey Tullos is appointed the permanent Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (Housing and Residence Life).
Casey began her career at UNC Charlotte 22 years ago as a Residence Education Coordinator (REC) in Holshouser Hall and has been promoted to positions of increasing authority and responsibility including Coordinator of Guest Operations and Assistant Director for Academic Initiatives and Staff Programs. She worked as Director of Residence Life at Winthrop University for a short period of time before returning to UNC Charlotte in 2018 to be the Director of Residence Education.
"Casey has been an admirable and capable leader of the department as interim AVC since the departure of Dr. Aaron Hart in June 2019," said Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Dr. Kevin W. Bailey. "Casey’s interim leadership included decision making around the future of the Phase XVI construction project, reviewing and expanding our residential living learning communities and strengthening our relationship with off campus apartment complex managers (including the Niner Choice Program)."
However, Casey’s most significant and challenging accomplishment has been managing housing during a pandemic.
No housing professional has prepared for a crisis in the form of a pandemic, yet Casey quickly adapted to the reality and has been the leader for such actions as de-densifying residence halls (thus reducing their occupancy and revenue by over half), coordinating a protocol to manage surge testing after a waste water signal has been detected, guiding the process to manage and answer the questions from anxious students and parents and keeping the morale of employees high as rules and conditions change regularly.
"Housing has been at the center of the University’s COVID-19 mitigation efforts and Casey has managed it all with grace, poise and professionalism. She has a great team who has met every challenge thrown their way with the health and safety of residents as paramount," Bailey said.
