Hofmann impacts students through creative services from behind the scenes

As a Charlotte native, it was almost a rite of passage for Max Hofmann to work at the University.

“Both of my parents graduated from UNC Charlotte. I am from Charlotte, so it’s kind of full circle,” Hofmann explained.

Hofmann started at Charlotte as a graphic designer for Housing and Residence Life before moving to the Student Affairs Marketing and Communications team. Now, as assistant director of creative services, Hofmann helps support campus partners by creating marketing materials needed to promote various events.

“I love working as a graphic designer,” Hofmann began. “I get to vicariously experience the diverse happenings around UNC Charlotte through the variety of projects we take on which is something I always treasure.”

Hofmann received the ‘Behind the Scenes’ award for the Division of Student Affairs. The Behind the Scenes award recognizes full-time staff who work “behind the scenes” for the good of Student Affairs, Charlotte and, while not being publicly celebrated, demonstrates meaningful impact through dedication and service.

“This job isn’t exactly student-facing so it was nice to be recognized,” Hofmann said.

In the eight years Max Hofmann has worked at Charlotte, he’s created thousands of designs that have made an impact on campus. Although his role is not technically ‘student-facing,’ the students are always seeing a part of Hofmann’s diligence when they walk to class.

“It’s cool to see some of the projects I work on when I walk through campus. It’s like ‘Hey that’s the poster I made’,” Hofmann said.

Hofmann’s work can be found in the digital signage posted in various student and academic buildings, the A-frames strategically placed in high-traffic areas, as well as the posters and elevator clings found throughout campus.

Not only does his work speak for itself, Hofmann enjoys the role he plays in creative services, too.

“I love the creative problem solving and craft that goes into each project. It’s an exploration and opportunity to learn about different areas of the University,” he said.

Hofmann’s nominator describes him as approachable, trustworthy and always willing to lend a hand.

“Maxwell Hofmann has made a profound and lasting difference in Student Affairs at UNC Charlotte,” the nomination stated.

His work may go unnoticed, but its impact is unmistakable.
